Tuesday - Tonjiru

Tonight's dinner was...

Tonjiru (pork and vegetable miso soup)
Orange Roughy in ginger soy sauce
Pan fried Moyashi (bean sprouts)
Steamed brocolli with Gochujang mayonnaise

Yes, my both kids are still under the weather so we stayed home all day. This usually drives me crazy because it drives my son crazy if he can't go out and burn all his energies out. But today, he was playing between Mario Kart on Wii and Thomas the Engine CD-ROM game on my computer back and forth for a little while, he was actually being a very good boy! (sort of...well, I should say, better than I expected.)
May I remind you, yes he is only 3 years old, already playing Wii (by that I mean, he turns on TV, switch to viedo mode on TV, then turn on Wii. Yes, I trained him well ;p) and knows how to use laptop computer...
His favorite thing to do on Mario Kart is to play against the world.
And he actually becomes 2nd place!
I used to think it's pretty cool he can beat other kids or adults in the world...but now I start to worry... maybe he plays games way too much.
So, he hardly plays on days he goes to school and only allowed to play while I prepare dinner at night.
But today was special occasion, I guess...
Oh, and also he's not allowed to play AT ALL if he is being a bad boy.
I bet he was living in his dreams today being able to play games all day -sigh

Well, so here's the recipes of the day;

Tonjiru

Bacon---3slices,
Daikon---1/4
Baby carrots---8
Onion---1/2
Broccoli stems---1 bunch worth
Tofu---1/4 to 1/2

Water---3cup

*Miso---2tbs
*Soy sauce---1tbs
*Sake---1tbs
*Mirin---1tbs

1) Cut all the veggies and bacon in bite size and break off tofu to a bite size by fingers.

By breaking off tofu by hand instead of cutting makes tofu get all the flavors in better.

2) In a small to a medium size pot, cook bacon until oil comes out.

3) Add vegetables to the bacon, then cook for a minute or two.

4) Then add 3 cups of water to the pot.
5) When it comes to a boil, lower the heat, then put all the *ingredients.
6) Cook until all the vegetables are soften.

The real version of this soup contains regular pork (usually belly meat), but I like to use bacon because it's easier and bacon brings a lot of flavors. Plus I had them in the freezer too :)

Orange roughy in ginger soy sauce

Orange Roughy---1 fillet (or 2)
White wine---1tbs

*Grated ginger---1tsp
*Soy sauce---2tbs
*Brown sugar---1.5tbs

1) mix the *sauce ingredients. put aside.
2) Spray oil in a skillet, cook Orange roughy on one side. Then flip.
3) Add white wine, then the sauce mix.
4) Cover and cook the fish on a low to a medium heat.
5) Flip the fish occasionally to have the sauce coats on both side.
6) Cook until fish is done. Make sure you don't overcook it, otherwise the sauce will burn!

Pan fried Moyashi

I don't know if you can tell how big this bag of bean sprouts is in the picture above! And it was only 99 cents!!!
But..the problem is, Moyashi doesn't last long, so I've gotta use them all before they go bad. I used about half of this bag tonight...way too much moyashi tonight. hahaha

Moyashi---1/2 giant bag. or 1 regular size bag.
Salt and pepper
Soy sauce---2tsp

1) In a large frying pan, 1tbs of oil (of your choice. I used olive oil because I ran out of canola oil), then cook the sprouts.
2) salt and pepper (about 1/2tsp each).
3) Right before the sprouts are all cooked, add 2tsp of soy sauce.

Broccoli with Gochujang and mayonnaise

Broccoli---1 bunch

*Gochujang (Korean chili pepper paste)---1tbs
*Mayonnaise---2tbs
*Sugar---2tsp

1) Steam or boil broccoli
2) Mix all the dipping sauce *ingredients.

This is the Gochujang ↑↑↑
It's usually pretty salty and spicy (to some people, it's reeeeeeeeeeeeeally spicy).
You can add little more sugar to the dipping sauce to make it little more sweet and spicy.

I don't read Korean, but usually in those red tubs are Gochujang at Korean grocery stores. Usually they have an English name on the tub too :)

The dinner was quite simple tonight, I think.
I had some leftovers from last night's dinner and also my husband didn't come home for dinner tonight, so I stopped myself from cooking way too much food :p

Here's my boys' bento for tomorrow---(I'm sending my son to school tomorrow! I think he's fine now...I think...)

Picture of the day:

You know how kids are very honest about food being tasty or not?
Well, I bought this ice cream (gelato, to be correct) to serve birthday cake with the other night. My son had a taste of it, and fell in love with it!

NO KIDDING!!!!!!

Because this is super good!
The after taste is so light and refreshing..if you know what I mean.
It doesn't leave you any sweet aftertaste. It's just amazing!

The only problem is?

This one pint cost me $4.99 plus CA tax! ;(
