Tonight's dinner was...
Hamburger patties
Kabocha (pumpkin) with bacon
Potato mac salad
Egg drop soup
I think it's Japanese thing. Hamburger Patty. We, Japanese call it 'Hamburg'.
It's actually considered as a type of 'steak' in Japan. If you go to steakhouse in japan, majority of places have 'Hamburg steak' on the menu.
Kids love it, adults love it. Everyone loves hamburg!
If you don't like meat too much, there's Tofu hamburg. Although most tofu hamburg has meat in the recipe... not really recommended for vegetarian I guess. ha ha ;)
So here's the recipe of the day:
Hamburg
ground turkey...1/2lb
ground lean beef...1/2lb
panko (Japanese bread crumbs)...1cup
milk...1/2cup
salt and pepper 1tsp each
potato starch (or corn starch)...3tbs
caramelized onion...1/2 of onion
red wine...1/2cup
*ketchup...3tbs
*tonkatsu sauce (or worcestershire sauce)...2tbs
*sugar...2tbs
1) In a small bowl, soak panko with milk and set aside.
2) Make caramelized onion by chopping onion in a tiny cubes then slowly cook on a low to med. heat with olive oil and salt for 10-15min. To speed up the time, you can add some white wine and cook on a med. heat. Then set aside on a plate to cool.
3) Once the onion is cooled and pankos are soaked, put them all in a big mixing bowl with ground meat. Add 3tbs of potato starch and salt and pepper.
4) mix them well by hand.
5) Spray oil on a large skillet on a low heat, then shape meat mixture into a palm size patty (or smaller). Slowly place the patty into the skillet. I shape the patties as I cook them. Once you put all the patties into the skillet, cover and cook on a med heat until both sides are cooked through.
6) Pour red wine and remaining ingredients on a lower heat. Jiggle the skillet to coat each patties with sauce.
Make sure you don't burn the sauce in the end!
My 3 year-old son is pretty picky eater since he was 1.
I've tried to feed him this and that...but never really worked.
Took about 2 years to convince him to at least try a bite of each food he gets on his plate.
Amazingly, he was able to eat hamburg tonight with a lot of onions in them!
I don't think he knew onions were in there, however by caramelizing onion he couldn't 'FEEL (taste)' onion in the meat. PERFECT! (Sweetness of the onion comes out when you caramelize them too.)
Also I think this sauce makes 10times more kids friendly taste for sure! But if you like something bit more salty than sweet, you can cut the sugar down in the sauce by all means.
For tonight's dinner,
Prep time - 10min
cook time - 25min
The key is, think about what you are cooking.
Then get all the ingredients you need in front of you.
Cut veggies and meats.
And cook! Multitask! Use 2 to 3 stoves at the same time and get in a groove! :)
The bento my husband and my son are bringing tomorrow...
Picture of the day:
I make my own bread too!
